Inter-form Tug of War

Mr Simmonds writes:

Year 7, 8 and 9 have been battling it out to see who have the technique and muscle to be the inter-form tug-of-war champions 2015.  The competition has been organised by Mr Simmonds, with Mr Dudgeon assisting to begin the pulling proceedings.  The competitions have taken place on the school field during the last week of term.  Each team has put forward four boys and four girls to represent the form group.  All students and staff within each year group have offered vocal support throughout all competitions.  All staff and students look forward to the event, with a big thanks to Mr and Mrs Farrow for the loan of the rope each year.

Year 11 students design classroom posters about presentation of work

Congratulations to our talented Year 11 students, Nathan Wilkins, Gabriella Wells, James Gander, Robert Sillett and Josh Slatter, whose designs were chosen to be made into classroom posters.  The posters, which will be put up in every classroom in the school, are a reminder to students of their teachers' expectations about presentation.

World War One "Pop-Up Recruiting Office"

As part of our continuing project on ‘Chailey and The Great War’, which is encompassing our own events, research, trips, special assemblies, commemorations, connections with local and national organisations and other elements, the Arts and Humanities faculties, staff and students, are organising a ‘pop-up’ 1915 recruiting office next Thursday 21st May.

Apart from recreating a military recruiting office from 100 years ago, there will also be the opportunity during break and lunchtime on that day for students to explore and study facsimiles and documents from the time. These are designed to help understanding as to what the atmosphere was like for people living in Sussex at the time, and the various pressures they may have felt to enlist (or not) in the armed forces. There will be also be characters at the recruiting office in costumes of the period.

Year 7 Sponsored Readathon

We are delighted to publish the results for the Year 7 Sponsored Readathon which took place recently.

The total amount raised was £480 and 180 books were read in two weeks by the 34 participating Year 7 students.

Chantal Camara raised the amazing amount of £80 - the most ever raised by a student.

Hattie Silverman read the most books - 28 in two weeks.

Well done to these two students who were each awarded a book token.  And well done to all those who took part and raised so much money for such a worthwhile cause -  Readathon is the UK’s national sponsored reading event, encouraging children to read for pleasure, while raising money for three children’s charities: ReadWell, which provides books and storytelling to children in hospital; CLIC Sargent, giving support to children and young people with cancer and their families; and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, which helps seriously ill and disabled children.  Since 1984, Readathon has raised more than £25 million and has helped encourage millions of children to read more books.

The students who took part in Readathon all received a certificate in their assembly today and can be seen in the photo.

The Form reps also received a certificate for their forms with the amount each form raised.

Year 7 student, Zantia, a Junior Bake Off Contestant

Zantia Stevenson writes:
JUNIOR BAKE OFF

As a normal school girl I had a dream, a passion for baking and also food tech. My dream became a reality!

First of all I printed off an application form for the Junior Bake Off and filled it in and made a mango and passion fruit Pavlova, then printed off a photo, attached it, and also included a photo of myself. The next thing I know is I get a phone call from a producer saying I got into the finals of the auditions!!!!!

Then I got given some dates and a few weeks ago I went to London and met Mary Berry and James Martin.  This was probably the best moment of my entire life (I am not even on the programme yet). Then a few days  later I got another phone call asking if I would like to be part of the show!!!!!!!!!

Questions you might ask me:

·       When do you start filming?
    We start filming in August.

·       What are you going to be baking?
Every week we will be baking something different. So you will have a technical challenge where you have to follow a specific recipe then a creative challenge where you have a theme and you have to make something inspired by that theme e.g. underwater.

·       Who inspires you to bake?
The person who truly inspires me is my great grandmother and this is because she is always  teaching me new things even though she is now elderly ( 97) and often says to me and my mum, (my other inspiration) “the moment I stop baking is the moment you need to be worried”.

·       What is your favourite thing to bake?
My favourite thing to bake is probably a pastry based tart because I love French baking as it is very sweet and I love making my own pastry and filling it with delicious and sweet sauces that are creamy and also you can make it look really pretty and professional.

·       How old were you when you started?
I started properly baking at the age of 4.  I started with cakes and wanted to bake every single day so at the age of 7  I started to bake on my own.

·       What career do you want to follow?
I would like to professionally be a chef and own a few coffee shops and become the head chef.  I have wanted this dream since I was 5!!!!!!!!!!

World War I

Mr Stephen Ziegler, our Design and Technology Technician, has been talking to our students at this week’s assemblies about his family connections with World War I.  He had nine close male relatives on the maternal side of his family who took part in the Great War and has carried out extensive research about them.  They were farmers and horse breeders and his account gives a touching insight into how the war had a profound impact on local communities in East Sussex.  A fascinating display of his research, including photographs, a war diary of one of his relatives, and local newspaper articles written at the time, is on view in the school entrance.

This supports our ongoing project to commemorate World War I, and History students are currently researching local men in this area who participated in the war and their work will be added to Mr Ziegler’s.

11 Weald leave a lasting legacy

11 Weald and their tutor, Mrs Diane Mace, wanted to celebrate the existence of a Weald tutor group as theirs is the last for the time being. They decided to plant a tree which will grow for many years and enhance the school environment.

Possibly, in years to come, their own children will come to Chailey and enjoy its beauty and sit under its shade!

It was decided to plant a tree indigenous to the Wealden area and the Woodland Trust suggested a Hornbeam.  This is a tree which, historically, was grown in the Wealden district for smelting for the iron industry and was used to make the charcoal.

Good luck to all in 11 Weald and a big thank you for giving Chailey such a lovely reminder of you.
