As part of our continuing project on ‘Chailey and The Great
War’, which is encompassing our own events, research, trips, special
assemblies, commemorations, connections with local and national organisations
and other elements, the Arts and Humanities faculties, staff and students, are
organising a ‘pop-up’ 1915 recruiting office next Thursday 21st May.
Apart from recreating a military recruiting office from 100
years ago, there will also be the opportunity during break and lunchtime on
that day for students to explore and study facsimiles and documents from the
time. These are designed to help understanding as to what the atmosphere was
like for people living in Sussex at the time, and the various pressures they
may have felt to enlist (or not) in the armed forces. There will be also be
characters at the recruiting office in costumes of the period.
