Arts Award

Our first cohort of Bronze Arts Award students received their certificates from Mrs Young before the Summer Show started.

This year, 14 students have achieved the Award, 12 with Bronze and 2 with Silver. Unfortunately not all of them were able to attend the Show to receive their certificates.

The Arts Award is run by the Creative Arts Team under the leadership of Mrs Johnson.

To achieve Bronze, a Level 1 national qualification, students take part in an arts activity they enjoy, go to an arts event, research their arts inspiration and share their skills with others.
They plan their work with an adviser, and keep a record by creating their own Arts Award portfolio. Their portfolio might be a folder, sketchbook, video diary or a website – it’s up to them.
There are no entry requirements or set time limit for completing Bronze Arts Award. Bronze will usually take about 40 hours to complete.

We are delighted to have 58 students in our second cohort of Arts Award.

Key Stage 3 Inter-Form Celebration Day

Mr Simmonds writes:

Celebrating success is very important at Chailey School.  The Inter-Form champions 2013-14 certainly achieved this in the 'Inter-Form Celebration Day', Friday 20th June.  7 Glynde, 8 Ashdown and 9 Ashdown had the privilege of wearing non-school uniform for the day.  The form tutors were also part of the day which involved a carousel of activities.  One activity was a mini cinema arrangement in the drama studio, this included sweets, drinks and, of course, pop corn.  The students were also put through their paces with a qualified boxing instructor teaching them the techniques of a professional boxer.  The groups had chance to relax in the library whilst playing games or reading books or magazines.  The final activity was voted the most popular with the sports hall kitted out with a whole world of fun. They had the opportunity to play table tennis, pool, skittles, giant jenga, giant connect four, inflatable twister, cash grabber and not forgetting the 70ft inflatable assault course.   Students had prizes on offer for challenges in the cash grabber machine and on the assault course.  The last added bonus was having access to the canteen early to sample the delights that were on offer at break and lunch.  All the students had a great day and after experiencing the day, were keen to push for first place in next year’s competition.

The new Peer Mentors enjoy a training day

Emily-Rose Peck, PR Prefect, writes:

On the 15th May, Mrs. Hickman and Mr. Simmonds took the recently new assigned Peer Mentors to the Boship Hotel for their training.  The students enjoyed learning about what makes a good Peer Mentor and what is expected from them to help the new Year 7s feel comfortable during their transition and their first year at Chailey.

Throughout the day they participated in many activities such as circle time and trust games and getting to know one another better. The day also helped with boosting their own confidence and gave them new mentoring skills.  They were shown how to deal with certain situations which may arise and how best to approach a student who may be going through a difficult time.

To see if they were good listeners a game was set up; they were split into teams and stood in a long line, one behind the other.  Mrs Hickman and Mr Simmonds then read out a story to the first member in the line, which they then, in turn, had to re-tell to the next person and so on.  At the end, the students in the team whose story was the closest to the original were the best listeners. This ensured everyone understood the importance of being a good listener.

All in all the day was really helpful and everyone enjoyed it and had fun.

This day would not have been possible without the support of the Boship Hotel and the wonderful lunch they provided, which was perfect.

Here are just a few of the comments from the students:

“I found today really enjoyable and got to know everyone better.”  Georgia Cudby.

“I found today really fun because of all the activities.”  Chloe Butcher.

“I found the day really good as all the teachers gave us confidence and advice about becoming a Peer Mentor.”  Izzy Enyon.

“I really enjoyed bonding with the other Peer Mentors.”  Adam Cork.

Visit to the Design Museum and the Science Museum

Experiencing centrifugal force
Tomos Whelpton Year 7 writes:

On Thursday 12thJune about 45 year 7, 8 and 9 students visited the Design Museum and the Science Museum in London as a reward for good DT work.

First we went to the Design Museum and saw lots of weird, wacky and wonderful designs and inventions. Then, after a quick lunch, we started to explore the Science Museum. We passed through the Launchpad, an interactive experimental area, until five students (including me) were taken to evaluate a new game the Science Museum were creating.

In the game we had to create a simple Mars Rover to send to the mars-like terrain projected onto the wall. It was simple but fun and extremely addictive. I had a great time in all the places we visited and hope that I get go on a trip like that again.

Year 10 Trenches Trip

Sam Caughley and Anya Hayward-Brown write:

We visited the Battlefields in Belgium on the 23rd May and the French Battlefields the day after. There were about fifty of Chailey’s History students attending the trip, with four teachers - Mr Dudgeon, Mrs Rickman, Mr Barker and Mrs Smith. Throughout the trip, we stopped at various locations significant to the battles during the First World War. These included cemeteries, battlefields and even a real trench! Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I think most people’s favourite part was the chocolate shop!

The Key Stage 3 Inter-Form Competition

Mr Simmonds writes:

The annual Key Stage 3 Inter-Form Competition has come to its conclusion. Year 7, 8 and 9 have been battling it out in their respective year groups since September. The 18 competitions and challenges have had a cross curricular flavour and have included: wall designs, spelling, cross-country running, speed maths, maths challenge, science experiments, artistic skills, talent show, general knowledge quiz, cooking challenge, tug-of-war, language challenge, Chailey challenge and merits from each term.  The final competition was held in June and students were informed of the results in their year group assembly. The winners from each year group have a celebration day held on Friday June 20th. The day is full of fun rewards for each of the triumphant form groups.

Chailey students visit Southampton University

The Future Scholar Scheme was held at Southampton University for five of our lucky students to participate in and enjoy.  The day was an opportunity to experience life at a top university and to sample some of the technological facilities on offer; these included a laser show and a wind tunnel experience.  Some of these facilities and research areas are used by national athletes, film directors and medical break-through teams.  As usual, our students were first class and hopefully inspired to think ahead about their aspirations.

The picture shows the five lucky students, Sam Segal, Louise Jessop, Henry Fouch, Charlotte Gander and Zoe Webber.
