Vive la difference!

Mr Verniol writes:

During the Easter holidays a group of 49 French students came for a visit to Chailey School. They had a brief lesson on the differences between French and English educational systems, followed by a tour of the school led by very kind students from Chailey. They all seemed to be having a fantastic time! Thank you to the nine Year 10 and 11 students who came into school during their holidays for this activity.

The Outstanding Teacher Programme at Chailey

The Outstanding Teacher Programme has once again been completed successfully at Chailey.  Facilitated by Mrs Marshallsay and Mr Dudgeon, the programme's aim is to develop outstanding teachers in the classroom and involves teachers from our own school (see Mr Verniol, Mr Deacon and Miss Sinclair in the photo!) and also teachers from our feeder primary schools and neighbouring secondary schools.

The programme is characterised by teachers learning from one another and having the opportunity to implement and evaluate new ideas in the classroom. In addition to discussing what works best for the students, the participants visit numerous lessons taking place at Chailey, which helps to develop their thinking about their own practice. This year, the participants were particularly creative and devised a huge range of interesting and challenging teaching strategies from which their students will certainly benefit.

We are proud of the high quality of teaching and learning at Chailey School and programmes such as these help us to ensure that we are continuing to provide students with the very best experience in their day-to-day lessons.

Years 7 and 8 Creme Egg Challenge

Years 7 and 8 spent the last week before Easter carrying out investigations involving Cadbury’s Creme Eggs. The students had to come up with their own investigation questions and ideas involved “How many Creme Eggs does it take to get to space?”,  “How many Creme Eggs can you fit inside a netball court?” and “What is the terminal velocity of a Cadbury’s Creme Egg?”.   In Year 7 there were two winning groups. The first was Sophie Wright, Victoria Grover and Harry Rienecker-Found, who investigated how many Creme Eggs equalled the weight of Sophie and “Approximately how many Creme Eggs tall was the Maths block?”.  The second winning group was Miller Perry, Eleanor Lomas, Katie Joyce and Harry Knighton, who created different parachutes for their Cadbury’s Creme Egg and investigated the effect this had on the speed of the egg when it was dropped from a window.  In Year 8 the winning group was Owen Scott, Ben Dekel De La Haye and Laine Houlton,  who investigated how far a Creme Egg would roll on different surfaces. All groups worked “egg-celently” and came up with some very unique ideas!

Battle of Lewes competition

Mrs Johnson writes:

Art Clubbers have been working hard on their entries for the Battle of Lewes competition, which is one of many events taking place in Lewes in May. Schools in the Lewes area, including Chailey, will be exhibiting their creative efforts to celebrate the Battle anniversary - look out in local press for ways you can get involved.

Here are some of our students' entries

Stem Sussex Robotics Challenge

Mrs Chalcraft writes:

Last week the Science department took twelve students to the Stem Sussex Robotics Challenge at the Ricardo Engineering Centre in Shoreham.  We had a tour of the centre where the highlight was watching Maclaren engines being made. The students then had to design and build their own robot to compete in a number of challenges, including robot football and robot wars.

Every group did amazingly well and our robots were definitely the best in the battle at the end.   Kess Rowe, Ashley Bishop, Greg Pearson and Tim Jenkins-Gilbert won the prize for the best design and  they were awarded with an impressive trophy.  Not bad considering there were 18 other teams from schools across Sussex.

Year 7 'Cartoon Capers'

Miss Thompson writes:

Year 7 girls had fun today completing their 'Cartoon Capers' dance. They have spent the past term choreographing their own piece, which culminated in them performing it to the whole group. They all did a super job and the work created was impressive.
