Staff and Year 10 Cricket Match

Staff and students took part in a cricket match after school on Wednesday, which, after some excellent batting and fielding on both sides, was won by the staff.  It made a fitting end to a summer filled with sporting activities and achievements and was the final flourish to end the term.

Chailey students visit Hickstead

Hickstead 2014
On Friday 27th June, 45 Chailey students were lucky enough to attend the Hickstead Derby.  A trip organised and led by Miss Thompson.

Throughout the day students watched many different events and were able to wander around a range of different stalls. Hickstead runs over four days in June and then again in August. There were many different events, including the Supreme Cob Championship. On Friday the main event was the Bunn Leisure Derby Trial and the winner at the end of the trial was Amgelie Von Essen, from Sweden. In between watching the different classes, we all looked around the showground and enjoyed the sunny weather.

Year 7 Magazine Day

Fashion shoot

Year 7 spent today creating their own magazines and becoming reporters for the day. They had  to attend a press conference and write up their reports on press releases.
There were fashion shoots, editorials and stories compiled to fill up the pages of their magazines.

The press conference
Mission accomplished!

Curriculum Enrichment Week

Mrs Duck and Mr Dudgeon spent a creative morning with 18 Year 5 and 6 students from Barcombe, Chailey St Peters, Newick and Wivelsfield Primary Schools in a Reading and Writing Workshop.  The students looked at ways to extend their descriptive writing using imaginative language and literary techniques and the morning culminated in them all producing a piece of their own writing.

Kabuki make-up for Year 7 Drama day with a Japanese theme

Year 7 learnt about the highly stylised genre of Japanese Kabuki Theatre through recreating the make-up for two striking character types - The Warrior and The Maiden.  In modern Kabuki Theatre, the female roles are taken by men, these characters are known as Onnagata.  As you can see from the pictures from our photo shoot, we had many Onnagata but also female actors being made up as male warriors.

Fearsome or beautiful 'Mie' poses were struck in reference to the famous freeze-frames created by characters as they are introduced to the audience.

Thank you to the three groups who made this day so enjoyable; I'm only sorry there wasn't enough time for a make-up artist to transform me in the last session!

Year 9 Wales Camp

Miss Maynard writes:

We are now well into our last full day of activities in Wales, and Chailey students have continued to be outstanding in their participation, behaviour and support for one another! Everyone has had the chance to spend a full day at the climbing centre, with many achieving more that they thought they could.  Five boys - Jay Sinden, Kieran Lambert, George stone, Nico Austin and Nathaniel Anscombe - have climbed the very highest log in the centre and rung the bell for all to hear!

All through the week, students have had fantastic experiences on the water, caving and climbing, and many have overcome fears or uncertainty and have a great deal to look back on and be proud of.  On our final night in the camp site we will give out students' awards and prepare to put on our disco shoes for some singing and dancing in our evening's activity.

Wales Camp

Mr Hillier writes from Wales:

Having found Wi-Fi at the climbing centre I am now able to update you all with news and photos from Year 9 Camp here at Llangorse, Wales.

We arrived safely at around 4pm on Sunday and the students quickly settled into their new surroundings.  Despite the heavy rain on arrival, everyone was in good spirits and soon had their tents organised to their liking.

Once the rain had ceased, the students were given a bit of free time to explore their new home for the week.  Some were quick to begin burning off their excess energy accumulated from the coach journey with a game of football, while others took a more relaxed approach, and along with a handful of staff, headed off to the lake to take in the tranquil surroundings.

We are now well into day three and the students have had a great couple of days so far.  Everyone took part in two of either Pony Trekking, Kayaking, Team Building or Canadian canoeing yesterday and today are either climing or caving followed by a 5k waterfall walk.

Feedback from the students would suggest that the highlight of the two days so far was capsizing the staff kayaks / canoes, which, of course, the staff were delighted about.

The camp quiz took place last night and tonight the staff will be getting their ear defenders ready for the Karaoke evening.

The students have been immaculate to this point in their behaviour and effort in the activities and around camp and are doing themselves, their parents and Chailey School proud.

That is all for now, hopefully more updates and pictures to follow in the next day or two.

Wales Camp

Mr Smith and Mrs Rickman write from Wales:

Year 9's annual camping trip to Llangorse in Wales moved on to the main outdoor activities of caving and waterfall walking on Tuesday.  In the caves, Chailey's first groups were guided through myriad underground bends, twists and turns; many overcame their fears and became natural leaders, and staff and students alike found they could fit through gaps they never thought possible!  The remaining groups take their turn on Thursday.

Meanwhile those in kayaks and canoes are hoping for some more sun during Wednesday's activities.

Curriculum Enrichment Week

Year 7 enjoyed making hats out of paper inspired by the artist Jeff Nishinaka.  This was part of the Japanese inspired events on the Arts and Technology day which took place on Monday.

Year 7 have had a Science inspired day today and have been researching insects and making them.  The serious business of judging their efforts is taking place in the photo above.

Year 8 have had an English and Media day today creating their own comics with new characters and stories.
