Kabuki make-up for Year 7 Drama day with a Japanese theme
Year 7 learnt about the highly stylised genre of Japanese Kabuki Theatre through recreating the make-up for two striking character types - The Warrior and The Maiden. In modern Kabuki Theatre, the female roles are taken by men, these characters are known as Onnagata. As you can see from the pictures from our photo shoot, we had many Onnagata but also female actors being made up as male warriors.
Fearsome or beautiful 'Mie' poses were struck in reference to the famous freeze-frames created by characters as they are introduced to the audience.
Thank you to the three groups who made this day so enjoyable; I'm only sorry there wasn't enough time for a make-up artist to transform me in the last session!
