On Monday 29th June, eight Year 10 female students
attended the ‘Women in Mathematics’ conference held at Bexhill Sixth Form
College. This annual event, run by the Sussex Maths Hub and the Further
Mathematics Support Programme, is designed to help celebrate women’s contributions
to mathematics and to encourage more girls to study Mathematics at A-level and
degree level.
There
were fascinating talks by leading female mathematicians on such topics as fluid
dynamics – why sharks and bacteria have to swim differently in water; the
mathematics used in criminal trials and why we shouldn’t blindly trust it; and
the difficulties and satisfaction of proving prime number theorems. They also
heard about the emotional ties people have with their lucky numbers and
possible reasons why 7 is the most popular number.
