CREST
is a UK
award scheme recognising success building skills and demonstrating personal
achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) project
work. It allows students the opportunity to conduct their own research and
undertake a real challenge outside the
national curriculum. They are highly regarded awards which are recognisable by UCAS in University
Applications. In previous years students at Chailey have undertaken the Bronze
CREST award; however, throughout last year Kess Rowe, a current Year 10 student,
worked extremely hard and achieved her Silver CREST Award. Congratulations
Kess.
Kess says:
I worked on my Silver CREST Award for roughly 30 hours,
but it was spread out over about 9 months so it wasn't too intense. STEM recommend
that you have a mentor (a business or organisation, not a teacher) to provide
information and to observe your work, although it isn't compulsory. I didn't have one. It is good if you have a
practical or have done your own research; I was doing a project on
vaccinations, so asked my science class to fill in a questionnaire I created.
It's a lot of fun because you actually learn a lot and become proficient at
that subject. The CREST Award is worth doing and will look really good on a CV.
