Southern Schools Book Award Presentation Evening at Roedean

On Friday 10th January, a group of Year 9 students visited Roedean School's theatre for the presentation evening of the Southern Schools Book Award prize. For the ninth consecutive year, Chailey students have been judging the five short-listed books, and voting for their favourite of the five novels chosen to represent the best of young adult fiction.

Our students were given a book token for their participation, and were able to spend them on copies of other novels by the nominated authors, and had the opportunity to have them signed, too. Several of our students can be seen pictured after having their books signed by this year's winner, Kevin Brooks.

Brooks' controversial novel for KS4 readers, 'The Bunker Diary', won the vote this year; however, our Chailey judges voted 'Unrest' by Michelle Harrison as our favourite (after some disagreement)!  All five books from this year and past years, including last year's winning novel by Malorie Blackman, 'Boys Don't Cry', are available to be borrowed from Mrs. Duck in the Library.

Phoebe selected for England football camp

Chailey School and the PE Department are delighted to announce that Phoebe Leitch has been selected to attend an Under 17 football camp for the England international squad. The camp will take place over 3 days and is situated at England FA training ground at St Georges Park. Phoebe was selected out of hundreds of girls who play at club level and is one of two girls selected from the Brighton Team. We wish Phoebe the best of luck whilst training with the England Team.

Students across the school are awarded points for their hard work and contribution to school life in general. This is in the form of computerised ‘merits’ for Key Stage 3, and ‘postcard points’ for Key Stage 4. Congratulations to the following students who received the highest number of points in their year group in the autumn term: Eleanor Lomas, Scarlett Bullen, Aimee Eaton, Taylor Littlecott, Tanya Hemsley, Matt Logan, Sean Birch, Charles Newey, Ruby Shute.

This half term has seen the transfer of the Interform cup to 10 Ashdown. They achieved this with a score of 19 points, and a 3 point margin between them and their nearest rivals Ditchling and Weald, who came joint second with 16 points. Ashdown came first in two categories; they received the highest number of ‘postcard points’, and also had the best overall average grades in their progress reports (along with Firle who came joint first). 

The competition continues in the New Year when there will be an Interform quiz challenge. The winners of the September/October half term were Firle. Congratulations to Ashdown and Firle, and good luck to all Year 10 next half term.

Lexia

The cohort of twenty Year 8 and 9 students who have been working on Lexia for the past ten weeks enjoyed a celebratory party in the library today to mark their achievement and progress.  Lexia is a software programme that provides individualised, targeted practice for students to improve their reading skills.  We introduced Lexia to students in September and it has been used enthusiastically by our first cohort.  They chose the books they are holding in the photograph as a reward for working so hard.
