Year 10 visit Sussex University

Kess Rowe, 10 Glynde, writes about her experiences of the visit

We started the day by being taken to a small room in the huge library (lecture halls were full as classes had just started). Laura, a student in Media and Communications, gave us an amusing talk on the reality of university life and how you do actually have leisure time. She gave us useful information about what to bring on your first day and that you may experience friendly pranking with mates.

We were then taken in groups of ten on tours of the buildings in the central area of the campus. It was fun but we didn’t actually get to see the accommodation or many of the lecture halls. However, we were shown the different areas where people lived and where they bought food.

After lunch we were taken into an amphitheatre lecture hall where we were taught about different learning styles. On the board there were 27 words and we had four minutes to try to remember as many as possible. Ten minutes later the tutor asked one person to come up and recite as many as possible. He only remembered two. Then he asked someone else so I volunteered and got 17, which was only one under the average!

All in all the day was very interesting; we experienced the atmosphere of a university and I found it nice to have an informal talk about the future rather than a serious one that is meant to push people with already high aspirations into education.

Year 11 Geography field trip to Brighton

Year 11 students visited Brighton to collect data for their geography controlled assessment - 'What are the land uses in Brighton's Central Business District?' - they completed land use maps, transport surveys and questioned members of the public.

Miss Jones led the trip and was impressed by the way all year 11 students approached and carried out this activity.
